Teacher pay questions

What does a newly qualified teacher take home?

An ECT starting on M1 in the Rest of England (£34,069 from September 2026) takes home about £2,169 a month after Teachers' Pension, tax and National Insurance. In Inner London (M1 £41,729) it's about £2,549 a month.

How much do teachers pay into their pension?

Between 7.4% and 12% of pay, depending on your salary tier (bands from April 2026). Most classroom teachers pay 7.4%–9.9%. Your school pays in a further 28.68% — one reason the Teachers' Pension is so valuable.

When do the 2026/27 teacher pay scales start?

Teacher pay scales run with the school year: the 2026/27 points (a 3.5% uplift on 2025/26) apply from 1 September 2026 in maintained schools, with academies usually following.

Do part-time teachers pay the same pension rate?

Your contribution tier is set by your annual salary rate, and contributions are charged on your actual (part-time) pay. Enter your FTE percentage in the calculator and it models both correctly.
